Introduction
Initially introduced as a tool to help SEO's and webmasters, link builders soon found that this new tool would be of great use to them as well.
Yahoo! Site Explorer offers anyone the ability to quickly and easily find out much information about any website. From pages indexed, to incoming links to the site or any page or subdomain within the site.
Using Site Explorer for Link Building
The first thing one needs to do in order to use the site for link building is visit Yahoo Site Explorer.
You will see that the interface is very plain. In the search box, enter the URL of the site you'd like to get information on and hit the "Explore URL" button.
Interpreting Yahoo! Site Explorer Results
Upon querying for a URL the first thing you will see is a list of pages Yahoo! has found for the site. However if you are link building this is not what you want to see, so simply select the "Inlinks" link to review the links Yahoo! has discovered for this site,
Site Explorer Inlinks
Immediately below the "Pages" and "Inlinks" hyperlinks you will see dropdown boxes which allow you to refine your query. The first box allows you to include or exclude links from the domain in question, including subdomains, or restrict your query to only external links.
The next dropdown allos you to display links to this URL only or the entire site. This is quite handy if you want to explore links pointing to the home page of the site, or any other page, to see what effect incoming links has on any page within the site.
Explore URL
If you want to review back links pointing to specific pages you can either enter the URL in the explore box found at the top of the page, or if you see the page in question in the list of URL's presented you can select the "Explore URL" hyperlink to review information relating to that page including incoming links both from within and without the site.
Site Explorer API
If you would prefer to use this tool locally, Yahoo has released an API which allows you to query Yahoo just as you would the Site explorer page. More Information on Site Explorer API
