Aaron Wall over at SEOBook.com answers this often asked question with what I think is a very spot-on answer.

Can You Build Links too Quickly?

My Advice is to always spread your link building campaigns out of over time.  It is much better to build 50 text links per month over 12 months then to build 600 links all at once.  You should also try and vary the types of places you are getting links.  Getting links from many different sources allows you to be much more agressive, and it is a much better long term strategy.

Link popularity is meant to be the system which tells the search engines how important your site is.  In fact Google has built itself around that theory.  They have even created a ranking algorithm to measure such link popularity and it even influences the rankings your site achieves.  Their algorithm is called PageRank.

But Google is not the only engines to use link popularity.  Therefore all sites need to have some way to build links to themselves to help influence algorithms like PageRank so the site can rank competitively.  This article provides some tips to quickly and easily build your link popularity as well as some longer term tactics you can use.

There are many companies out there that offer links for sale on a network of sites or that offer you admission to an “automated link network” for a low monthly price. It’s common to see advertisements for 1000 links for $9.95/month, or 4500 links for $14.95/month etc… These may sound like a good deal at first but before you buy from them it’s a good idea that you understand what the pros and the cons are. In some cases it may be worth the risk to buy some cheap and easy links, but in other cases it might not be worth the potential penalizations by the search engines.
