I recently had a client that was concerned that his link popularity was being leeched by his outgoing links.

In other words, he was concerned that sites he linked to were inheriting too much of his own link popularity.

In this article, I thought I’d explore this issue and provide some recommendations on how to handle your outbound linking strategy.

I often get asked this question.  It’s one which confounds many people.

We hear about how important it is to have as many quality inbound links as you can, however once you start gathering these links you find that many webmasters prefer or insist on reciprocal links.  So, the question then becomes should I do this?

In this article, I explore this issue and provide my recommendations.

There’s an interesting thread at SearcheEngineWatch in the forums that discusses internal pages having a higher PageRank than the home page.

And, while this is not impossible, there could be many reasons for it to happen.

In this article, I look at some of the reasons why the internal pages of a site can have a higher PR value than the home page.

There has been a lot of talk lately about directory submissions and whether they are worth it or a waste of time.

I’ve shown you some of the best ways to research links. Now, let’s look at some of the basics when it comes time to requesting those links.

I thought I would do this because, as I was reviewing past articles on link building strategies, a thought occurred to me: The tips I have provided are more general in nature.  Therefore, I have decided to write a sort of ‘how to’ article. Only, in this one I will give you some of the things you should not do when performing link building.

Textlinkbrokers is looking for a research writer to write 2500 words about link baiting (.20 per word is about twice the going rate).  This could include the history of it, examples of link baiting techniques, or whatever you feel is good info.

In order to find the person who has the “right stuff” we are asking that anyone interested in the job, submit 1 paragraph to me explaining one example of a link baiting technique. This can either be an established technique or one that you created from your own imagination.

After a week or so I will pick the person I feel is the most qualified and then award you the position.  Full details on the requirements will be given to the winning person.

If I find that there are several people qualified for the position, I may award more then one job.  There is also the chance that this can become a ongoing relationship, as there are many different subjects we need research done on.

Good Luck, I look forward to receiving your responces.  Please send them to Jarrod@textlinkbrokers.com with the subject of “Link Baiting Example”.

Thanks for the question Neil,

I’m not sure if I would call it buzz, since it has been a hot topic now for a couple solid years, but this is really a great question.  First I think its important to realize that it is the search engines jobs to create relevant searches for its users.  In doing so they are constantly developing ways to better their algorithms.  This has been their goal from day 1.

It is also important to realize that as much as they would love to implement a thousand algorithms to due everything they desire, it is simply not possible due to limitations of processing power, DB managment issues, legacy algorithms, and the basic limitations of their developers and managers.  In other words, just because something is “great in concept” does’nt mean that it is “possible to implement”.

Many people believe that Google is directly attacking paid ads by:

- Using block analysis to determine location of links

- Searching for words such as “Sponsored Links”, “Advertisements”, etc..

- Looking for a bunch of unassociated links grouped in a tight area..

- Manually looking through link inventories to manually penalize paid ads on those sites...

I think people are making it much more complex then it needs to be.  While it is very possible that they are doing some or all of the above mentioned techniques, I think there are much easier ways for them to go about accomplishing their end goal.

This is a good point to talk about LINK PROFILES, and the corresponding trust given to sites that have “good” ones.

With Link Profiling, Google only needs to look at the kinds of sites that a website links too in order to determine whether any link on that site should be trusted, and thus be given more or less weight accordingly.

- If a website links out to tons of low quality, unrelevant, or “bad neighborhood” sites, then their link profile would suggest that those links should be given less weight.

- If a website only links out to quality, relevant sites, then it’s Link Profile would suggest that those links should be given more weight.

Now there is a more to link profiling then just outbound links (inbound links, link trends etc..) but, to me, the link profiling concept is one that is much easier to control, then trying to create a bunch of new and complex algorithms that determine link location, number of outbounds in a specific area, etc. etc.. While I do believe that they do a little bit of direct filtering of paid links, I think it is a much smaller part then most people think.

My personal belief is that Google could care less if a link is paid or not, as long as the site providing it has a "trusted profile".

With that being said, as link builders, it is our job to build links under the assumption that Google is doing everything to devalue paid links as they possibly can, including all the things that the masses believe they are doing.  Being a demand driven company we are somewhat at the mercy of our clients beliefs in what links “work”.  Be it so, we still create programs that are much more advanced then what our clients are demanding.  Our Hosted Marketing Pages are a good example of that.  They are the “perfect link” in my eyes, yet it has taken well over a year for the market to catch up to the idea.

In addition, we feel it is our Job at Textlinkbrokers to do some of the manual work to filter out sites that we feel Google would not want ranking.  Which is why we thoroughly examine every site we sell links to.  We will not sell links to sites that do not in some way deserve to have a shot a ranking for the keywords they are going for.  It is my personal belief that as long as we are not, as a company, trying to manipulate Googles link algorithms by attempting to rank websites that have no reason to be where they are trying to go, that we are doing more good then bad.  It is also my belief that if we do our job right and connect our high quality clients sites with high quality trusted inventory partners, that we are only helping to positively build the “link profiles” of both websites.

Howdy Y’all,

After going through our list of leads today, I couldnt help myself but rant a little bit.

Everyday we get contacted by at least a couple sites that are complete jokes.

Why are you contacting us to promote your spammy, machine-generated, no unique content, ugly as can be, 1000 doorway paged, traffic equalized, adwords equalized, article equalized, million page regional directorized, keyword1keyword2keyword3.wordpress.com website?

About 10 percent of the leads we get everyday are from sites like this.

Really people, If your going to be creating crappy sites, you should go join some crappy link network, dont bother contacting us.

WE WILL NEVER HELP PROMOTE A SITE THAT DOES NOT PROVIDE VALUE TO THE INTERNET!

Ok, I feel better now

As part of our Q&A series, I received the following question from one of our visitors:

Hi Im new to the whole website bussiness. Ive finished my site know I need Links, Im starting with the free ones ot the moment ( RECIPRICAL ) AS MONEY IS SCARCE. The problem Im having is getting my head around the how to do links. Ive put some banners onto my site but I dont see my link on there site. Is there any sites that I would benefit on visiting, I need the link subject explained to me in language that I can understand. Paul

Paul,

One of the great thing about link building is that there are a million people out there talking about it. A simple search on Google for “Link building tips” or “Link building advice” will bring up a ton of results.

Here is a link to a Link Popularity Guide that we put together. It’s pretty comprehensive and covers a lot of the basics.

Let me know if you have any other specific questions, and please do not spend your money on any of those networks that offer thousands of links for 19.95 per month.  They will do you more harm then good.

I recently read an interesting blog entry in which the author basically said that you can’t build links too fast, therefore penalization from Google for aggressive link building isn’t an issue.

While he does make some valid points, I think there is a point where there is too much.

In this article I explore this issue more and try to help you decide how much is too much.

More often than not, the typical link building scenario starts with a paid Yahoo! directory submission, a free DMOZ submission and perhaps a paid Business.com submission if it suits the client.

But DMOZ can offer so much more to you, even if your site isn’t accepted or, more typically, takes months to get listed.

In this article, I introduce you to the other link building opportunities available using DMOZ.

With the web growing at such a phenomenal pace, many businesses and webmasters are looking to capture just a little more market share.

One way they do this is to build new sites in addition to maintaining their existing sites.

But because they are new, they sometimes take a while to make a big enough impact on the search engines to get noticed so that they can start ranking and bringing in traffic.

In this article I look at some of the simple things you can do if you are in this situation.
