Welcome to the first edition of the Textlinkbrokers regular newsletter.  In this and forthcoming newsletters you will find summaries and links of some of the best articles and forum discussions on links and link building in the industry, plus tips and tricks for link building.

In the first article, SEOMoz explains “Why It Doesn’t Pay to Game Digg (or Other Link Aggregation Sites)” because trying to manipulate sites like Digg may provide little or no value.  That is because there are 2 key factors influencing your “Diggability.” First is the combination of humans and algo’s watching for spam and the like, while the second has to do with the value a Dugg link caries (at least in the short term).

In “How To Win Links And Influence Engines” a very important point is made in terms of link building.  That is:  That link building is more than just flooding the web with requests for links.  Such link phishing can have many negative results.  Instead, the article’s author suggests that the best way to capture good links is to earn them.  The article goes on to explain how this is done.

Still not sure how to win links?  Well, the Link Spiel goes on to provide more tips in their article entitled:  “There’s More Than One Way To Skin A Link.” In it, the author explains how she goes about gathering great links, from personalized emais to post cards via snail mail.  According to the author “They’re an effective low cost way to get people’s attention, reinforce the email previously sent and lend some credibility to it.”

Now if you feel that perhaps you don’t have the time or resources to personally mail or email prospective link partners then perhaps you can follow Jim Westergren’s tips in his “Backlink Generator” article.  Here, he provides tips on how to build links to your site through some less resource intensive means, such as directory scripts hosted on your site, tools and themed blogs.

Because let’s face it.  In the end, backlinks are all about influencing link popularity.  Especially when search engines update their databases, as Google recently did.  It’s also important to note that link building, as with any of your SEO efforts is an ongoing process.  You can’t merely build a few links and then stop, you have to always be on the look out for new places to request links from.

Link building tip of the day:

There is a site which some would have thought disappeared when the dot com bubble burst.  But, it stuck around and recreated itself and is now a great site to get a good free link from.  The site I’m referring to is Exactseek.com.  It is much like DMOZ or Yahoo’s Directory in that it uses a hierarchal system of organizing links.  Best of all, the submission is free (however a membership is required) and when you submit to Exactseek, your link actually appears on a other sites in Exactseek’s network.
