Bigdaddy Got You Blue? - 3 Things You Should Know!

Have your keyword ranking’s fallen since the last Google Update?

Has BigDaddy been a BIG pain in your butt?

There are three things that I have seen sites do wrong that have led to lost rankings in the latest Google Update.

1. POOR INBOUND LINKING STRATEGY

Most people forget that “How You Build Inbound Links” is just as important as the “Kinds of Links You Build”.  Having a strategy that incorporates a variety of link building techniques, implemented over a long period of time is essential to post BigDaddy rankings.

One example of a poor linking strategy is joining an “Automated Link Building Network”.  If 99% of your links are coming from the same exact kind of page with the same exact url structure, link descriptions, etc.. then it wouldn’t be too hard to understand why you lost rankings.  The second problem with automated link building programs is that they build links too quickly. It doesn’t look natural to gain thousands of links overnight.  A much better strategy is to spread your link building over a 6, 12, or even a 24 month time period. The exception to that rule is if you are already an established site with a lot of trust in Google or if the huge increase in links is coming from authority and very on-topic sources.

2. NO , OR POOR, OUTBOUND LINKS

Outbound links are another major cause of lost rankings after the BigDaddy update.  If your site is not well connected with the rest of the sites in your industry, it is very hard for Google to determine what exact industry you are in.  Google uses your link profile just as much as it uses the content on your site to determine what your site is actually about.  Linking to trusted authority sites in your industry builds a strong link profile in Google, and will do wonders for your rankings.  SEO experts have known this for a long time, but it has become even more important in the post BigDaddy era.

There is another benefit of outbound linking.. It’s called “Link Karma”.  You’ll be surprised how many people closely examine their referrer logs or their backlinks on a regular basis.  When they see that you have been kind enough to link to them, and see that your site has some useful content, they will often times give you a link back.

3. LOW CONTENT TO LINKS RATIO

If your links are growing exponentially yet the content on your site has been stagnant for long periods of time then you are setting yourself up for failure. I have seen many sites spend thousands of dollars on very well thought out link building strategies, yet completely disregard building quality content on their site.  Content is King, and so are Links.  To rank well these days you need Both; a solid content strategy as well as a link building program that is designed to consistently grow over time

To conclude this article I figured I would give you three examples of things you can do to in order to fix some of the problems I’ve described.

1. Build a blog, post to it regularly, and link out to authority sites relevant to your industry.

This will not only build content on your site but will also build relevant outbound links.  In addition, if you write compelling articles people will naturally link to you.  Even Matt Cutts and Google say that getting links from blogs is an essential part of building trust.

2. Build a Topical Wiki such as the one we built on our site, www.textlinkbrokers.com/wiki

Wikis have the same effect as blogs.  They build solid outbound links, content, and provide great link bait for urging people to link to you naturally.

3. Spend a little more time planning a long term SEO strategy.

Building links randomly and half-hazardly throwing content on your site is a recipe for failure.  Plan to build a variety of links over a longer period of time, and build content that not only encourages people to link to your site, but also builds trust in the search engines; showing them that you are a valuable resource worthy of ranking well.
