Email This ArticlePlus a review of new technology applied to shopping online, the business of SEM, Google’s battle with MSN hits the courts (and sounds like a soap opera), a great summary on 301 redirects, plus FEMA only likes IE. All that in today’s roundup.
Gee so much news I don’t know where to start.
Let’s start with the soap opera that is the latest Google MSN battle, since I find it humorous. Apparently, Ballmer isn’t the only one prone to tantrums. According to this article Bill Gates likes to get mad and swear too. This came out during the daily Google vs MSN court case regarding Google’s recent Chinese hire.
In other Google news, the Unofficial Google Weblog let us know that today is the day Google was founded.
Jeremy Zawodny’s blog has a great review of new technology and how it’s being applied to shopping. The new technology, called Transparansee allows shoppers many more ways to slice and dice results to get exactly what they are looking for.
Search Engine Watch has a couple good articles. The first is a must read if you want to enter the business of SEM. It may be long, but I think it’s a must read if you’re thinking about starting your own agency.
The second article indicates that Yahoo! may have helped to send a Chinese journalist to jail by providing his email address to officials.
The Stuntdubl blog has a great summary on 301 redirects. It provides links to tons of redirect resources. I gotta tell you, I’ve employed rewriters redirects on dozens of sites. The power of the rewriter is unbelievable. In terms of SEO its probably the greatest invention since sliced bread.
Apparently, if you need help from FEMA because of Katrina, you have to use IE on their site. That’s because it isn’t compatible with any other browsers. So if you try to connect with a Mac or Linux computer you’ll be out of luck. I must say, for a government site this is just pathetic. Why isn’t it more compatible? Not everyone uses Windows you know.
Also today, the news you’ve been waiting for (if you’re an Apple or Ipod fan). The much awaited but hardly secret announcement of an iPod enabled cell phone. While this wasn’t really suprising, there was also some interesting news about the new iPod Nano. 1000 songs on a device that is “thinner than a No. 2 pencil....The iPod nano is 80 percent smaller than the original iPod.” Cool.
Finally today, I’m sure you’ve been hearing rumors of a Google OS. In fact many more authoritative blogs appear to be jumping on the bandwagon speculating. Before you run out to buy your USB drive let me shed some light on this for you.
I checked out the site “reporting” the news and I quickly saw that this site is all pure speculation. They are reporting “news” that hasn’t happened yet. In fact one of their recent posts was dated in the year 2007, a bunch in 2008 and one up to 2029. the blog is called Future Feeds after all.
Guess they can say “gotcha” to most of the web.
In any case, though, it was a good story. It’s something I’ve predicted for some time. And the article posted does cover all the points I’ve considered – a USB bootable device with a linux core and some basic connectivity and web enabled applications which use a Google File System. I must say, it’s almost like I wrote that article :) (I didn’t though).
