New Orleans News, Yahoo Raves and Google Earth Concerns... Daily Round up September 1, 2005

I came across a somewhat disturbing yet also enlightening blog today.  One that outlines one persons view of the current situation in New Orleans.  That as well as new features from Yahoo!, concerns about the new Google Earth and some more lighthearted news as well.

First to the New Orleans news:  This blog was started as a personal journal like many others, however with the recent events in the Big Easy it turned into kind of a documentary, illustrating what this guy is seeing happen around him.  And if even part of what he says is true its deeply disturbing.  For more on the New Orleans tragedy, you can also look at recent satellite images.

To anyone with friends or family in or around the affected areas, our hearts and minds are with you.

On the heels of the Katrina tragedy there is word that new features now found in Google Earth are troubling.  In case you haven’t already heard, Google Earth now offers 3D imagery of major cities.  The concern is that terrorists can now quite easily plan an attack on any of the cities for which there is 3D imagery.  I dunno, I mean, do they really need 3D imagery to plan such an attack?  I think Google Earth could have helped them do that without the 3D pics.

As the debate rages over whose is bigger, Grey Hat News shows us who is definitively the biggest search engine, and it isn’t who you’d expect.

A New feature at Yahoo! will allow you to vote for your favorites.  Yahoo!s blog has a post talking about the new features found at http://bestof.yahoo.com/

Did you ever want to try Linux out, but were afraid because of how “un-user friendly” it is?  Well now you can relax – for a short time only one of the most user friendly versions of Linux is going to be offered for free.  Linspire will be giving away its OS for the next few days.  On a personal note, I’ve switched from Windows to Linux and have been using Linux exclusively at home for over a year and trust me – it ain’t that much different than Windows.  Best of all, there are tons of free distros out there.  I use Redhat’s Fedora release which is also free.

Finally today, something a little lighter.  Mazda has “thrown away the key” so to speak.  They are demoing a new vehicle that uses a USB drive instead of a key.  Not only that, but the USB can also store your personal information and also allow the ability to transfer maps and driving directions to your destination.
