Well, there isn’t a lot of search engine related news, however there are some interesting facts floating around today.  From Flickr users planning ritual ‘suicide’ to Answers partnering with teachers and more.

First to the Flickr news.  Some users of the popular image sharing program are planning a mass exodus if Yahoo! moves forward with their plans.  This is because Yahoo! is forcing Flickr users to merge their Flickr accounts with a Yahoo! account.  While this may be good news for Yahoo! users, in that they can centralize their accounts, it may not be such good news for Flickr users.

In other Flickr news, many people are sharing their images of Hurricane Katrina.  At 10:30 EST there were over 1200 images shared.  This afternoon when I checked there was close to 1500.  This also provides more proof into just how powerful tags have become on the web.

From Search Engine Watch.  Last week Answers.com released a set of tools aimed at helping teachers.  This is a great idea for a search engine – to help provide teachers with resources.  Not only is it a great way to help the community but also a great way to build a more loyal user base.  I’m surprised more engines don’t do this.  Sure they have developer APIs but not much else.

There is even more speculation on Google’s plans for world domination starting with free wi-fi.  Guess there might be some merit to this rumor if a more reputable news source is speculating?

You know something is getting more popular when governmental bodies take it on.  Apparently the Federal Conservative party in Canada is now podcasting.

Finally today, the on again/off again revolutionary new Windows file system – WinFS is on again and released in Beta according to this blog post.  It will be interesting to hear the early reports and see if this new file system is everything Microsoft said it was going to be.
