C3PO joins Google?...Daily Round up July 28, 2005

Ok maybe the golden android didn’t join Google, but the company did purchase an Android.  That and Google is releasing more shares for sale.  That’s just two of the news announcements made today.  The days news started quiet but did pick up through the afternoon.

So what do you do when you want to raise $4 billion?  If you’re Google you release more shares.  But with about $2.5 billion already in the bank, and the company earning about ½ billion every quarter, what could Google want with all that cash?  There are so many ideas floating around that it would take a series of articles to discuss them.

One company we know Google won’t use this money for is called Android.  That’s because they just bought them.  This company has something to do with wireless technology but they aren’t saying much and neither is Google.  But considering that wireless is one of the many avenues that all the search engines are expanding into it’s no surprise really.

A Search Engine Watch blog post seems to indicate that Google is still toying with its results.  Not it appears they are toying with displaying 3 paid ads instead of the normal two on the top of the SERPs.  I guess $4 billion isn’t enough for whatever they are going to buy after all?

Ok enough about Google

I got prompted by FireFox to update my Yahoo! toolbar today.  I didn’t know why until I saw a post on the Yahoo! Search blog.  Apparently Yahoo! is building more of their contextual search (known as Y!Q) into the search toolbar.  Now you can highlight sections of text and launch a contextual Yahoo! search.  Way to go Yahoo!

In other Yahoo! news, the company officially announced a low cost music service.  Boasting over a million songs in the library, Yahoo! hopes that $5 per month for a yearly subscription will entice users to subscribe.

Finally, one of the lesser known search engines – mamma.com – still insists that it wants to purchase desktop search package Copernic.  Apparently now that mamma.com is on more firm footing, after a recent SEC probe, Copernic feels more sure of the deal.

Well that’s all the news today.  On a personal note I have to say it’s been a great day for me.  I got to go watch some of the National Hockey League’s best players at an Olympic training camp here in my home town.  I never thought I’d get to see many of these players live.  Plus I got to see the Great One himself – Wayne Gretzky – across the arena from me.

Yup it was a great day…
