Email This ArticleIt seems like everywhere you go on the web and with almost every search you do you see a Craigslist.com listing. Turns out, this isn’t too far from the truth.
Hitwise has released new stats saying that Craigslist’s Market share of total U.S. Internet visits increased 73 percent the week ending June 25, 2005 versus a year-ago (week ending June 26, 2004). Among the 30 most popular Craigslist city sites, 23 had year-over-year gains in market share greater than 100 percent, and three others have since more than doubled. This is because Craigslist seems to offer listings for everything – from apartment rentals to hoses for sale to pets for adoption to dating.
In terms of search, AOL is testing a new service. One which will take a web page and squish it to fit onto the screen of a portable device like a cell phone. Users can reach the site directly from their phones by typing in the address (mobile.aolsearch.com). Too bad they are so late as Google and Yahoo! already offer this service. You can find out more about the Google service at http://www.google.com/sms/ and for Yahoo! go to http://mobile.yahoo.com/search
I came across a cool new Google backlink checker. This page lets you input a URL and it will return Google’s backlinks with PageRank. One thing I can’t figure out is how they can do it so quickly. Usually you need to send multiple queries to Google to get the PageRank value of each site, so it’s pretty amazing to see a site that can return results so fast. Of course querying Google for the PageRank value violates their terms of service so I would expect this site to disappear soon.
Podcasting is all the rage these days. For those who don’t know, podcasts are the next step in the evolution of the blog. They are essentially audio blogs. I bring this up because a site which is considered an authority in our industry, SearchEngineWatch.com is now into podcasting. Partnering with Webmasterradio.fm, SEW alumnus Danny Sullivan broadcasts daily from Tuesday to Friday and will sum up the previous days news, much like our Daily Roundup. Just tune into Webmasterradio.fm to listen to these broadcasts at 11:30 EST and rebroadcast at 2 PM EST.
Wired Online has an incredible article by John Battelle, another search guru, about the birth of Google (find the article here). It talks about how Sergey Brin and Larry Page met and didn’t quite get along at first. It also explains how they came up with the name PageRank. While it is a long article, I highly recommend the read.
That’s about all I can come up with at this time. Be sure to check back tomorrow for more news.
