A development from Google more than 2 years in the making, upgrades by Yahoo! in addition to one coming next year and news from AOL.  Plus a Google Guys opinion on redirects, how to make your AdSense pretty, and college life according to Google.

First, lets talk AOL.  AOL is the first engine to move into podcast search.  Sure you can search podcasts on other engines like Feedster or Technorati, but AOL is the first major player in this space.  Granted it’s likely going to turn into just another music search engine but it’s nice to see AOL call it a podcast search.

Yahoo! has launched a new search – this one a mobile shopping search.  Yahoo! Search blog has more details.  In addition, the company is allowing developers to develop mobile shopping applications using API’s.

In other Yahoo! news, the company has launched the slow process of upgrading its email service.  This has been a long time coming since Yahoo! bought the company which is facilitating the upgrade some time ago.

In the last piece of Yahoo! news today, there are rumors that Yahoo! search marketing will be revamped early next year.  A completely new system is expected to launch in early 2006.

Now for the Google news.  In what seems to have taken forever, Google now has a blog search.  Of course it’s in beta.  Google also has a cool new university help page.  From the site: “A lot of it is academic, a lot more is personal, it all matters, and you can probably use better tools for handling it effectively. On this page, we’d like to introduce you to a few of them.”

In a roundabout way, Matt Cutts blogs here on how Google deals with redirects, both 302 domain hijacking and 301 permanent redirects.  It’s worth the read.

Finally today, if you’re looking for a way to jazz up your Adsense ads to make them convert better, consider what this forum has to say.  It has a link to a site which uses flashing text to catch the eye before displaying the ad.  It would be interesting to know if this actually works.

Well that’s all the news for now
