Email This ArticleAs hard as I can try to resist, it seems that Google dominates the news lately. Don’t get me wrong I think Google is great but I’d like to see more news from the other engines as well.
Since it’s all about Google, this will be a shorter than normal roundup. But that’s not to say that the news isn’t all intriguing.
First off – Google Desktop Search V2 is now available from the Google site. Now before you go saying “I’ve got Desktop search why do I need this one? I’ll give you a one work answer – sidebar. This new search has an integrated sidebar which can reside on your screen showing you many things such as most popular sites, your favorite news and feeds, your Gmail account status and more. Google is definitely treading in Microsoft territory with this new package. There’s also a bunch of plugins available to extend your sidebar’s capabilities.
According to the Google blog, the company’s machine translation services did quite well in an independent competition. This is great news for Google as many search engine’s translation services leave something to be desired.
There is a rumor circulating that Google will release an IM client on Wednesday. This blog apparently quotes and article published in the New York Times which indicates that Google will be introducing a “communications tool” on Wednesday.
I guess I wasn’t totally truthful when I said it’s all about Google – Yahoo! gets a brief mention today. This is because the companies appear to be both vying for a well known online property. Trader is apparently in talks with many potential purchasers. No one knows for sure what Trader will sell, or if the whole company will get swallowed up by another.
As I said, it’s a quiet day, but based on some of this news, I expect this could be a very eventful week.
