When is a Google update NOT a Google update?.. Daily Round up September 9, 2005

I wrote yesterday on how Matt Cutts blogged that what we were seeing happening at Google wasn’t technically an update.  Seems that’s causing quite a stir, at least with a few people.  Also, there’s some interesting new Google queries out there, along with some extras for your Mac Gmail notifier.  Finally today, since it’s been a light news day I’ll show you what I’m working on this weekend.

First to the Google update news.  Danny Sullivan has a really interesting post on Search Engine Watch talking about Matt’s post saying this isn’t an update.  While there’s lots of semantics being thrown around (And I’m right in the thick of it) no one seems to be disputing that something is going on.  We just can’t agree on what – some (including me) call it an actual update while others call it a “shift” or “tweak” in results.  Personally, when I see a client’s site go from 300,000 indexed pages to 700,000 then 1.4 million I call that an update, not a tweak.

Danny also posted about how you can receive “unsafe” results in Google and Yahoo! if you tried.  It’s a good way to test their family safe filters to make sure they are still working, and no one has found a way to contravene them.

Finally today, if you use a Mac and the Gmail notifier you may like to know that there are some extras hidden in the notifier.  Be sure to read this post to find out.

Ok now for me and my eternal geekiness.  I am building a search engine this weekend.  Just for something to do.  Yeah I know, I’m pathetic.  But I’ve been looking for a simple, light indexer and I think I’ve found it.  And since I already have most of what I need sitting on my computer I thought I’d give it shot.  It shouldn’t take too long.

So that’s all for me.  I hope you enjoy your weekend!
