Email This ArticleWow, the last day before a long weekend and there’s TONS of news to report on. I never thought I’d use so many web terms and acronyms at once. From an update to Yahoo! IM that even angers Y! employees, a Google Engineers blogging, to a ‘disaster wiki,’ some new Google Earth images, a birthday and an internet first.
So where to start....Why don’t we get the Google news out of the way shall we? First, Google has been providing new images for Google Earth which can be overlayed existing images showing the current state of the area of the US affected by Hurricane Katrina. They are some disturbing images.
With the advent of Katrina, and the aftermath following, sites have been going up ever few minutes, it seems. I found a couple more if you are interested. First is a site which uses the Google Maps API to show some important facts on the area. There’s also many Wiki’s poping up with ongoing news, here is a link to just one of them.
Google’s own Matt Cutts has been busily blogging. In one entry he talks about links and PageRank and how Google is getting better at identifying those links which could be bought. And just before that he blogged about how WHOIS can work against you.
For the last little bit of Google news we go to the “official” Google blog. For those users who prefer their Mac, there is now a Gmail notifier for Mac. Hey Google Guys, if you’re reading this, can you make me one for Linux? Thanks a bunch!!
I also have some Yahoo! news for you. First, did you know that Yahoo! has lowered the price for domain registration? It’s true, and you can find out more at their domain registration page.
In case you haven’t already noticed, there has been another update to Y! IM. And it’s causing an uproar with users. This is because the “typical” install makes many changes that some users will not like. It’s causing such an uproar even one of Y!s own well known employees is complaining.
Ebay turns 10! Not bad for a program that got whipped up over a spare weekend.
Finally today, you know the web is growing when...
The oldest soap opera in North America goes blogging. Podcasting actually. Guiding Light, which started on the radio over 70 years ago has launched a podcast from which fans can download 30 minute episodes of the show.
Well that’s all for today. I hope you have a good long weekend, and we all hope that news out of the southern US gets better in the coming days.
