News Corp to take on MTV and more... Daily Round up Aug 8, 2005

What is Skype worth?  If you don’t already know, Skype is a voice over IP provider which offers free and inexpensive telephone connections via the internet.  With Skype you can call another Skype user and even someone else’s telephone via the web.  So why would News Corp (also owner of Fox TV et al) be interested in the service?

They are so interested, in fact, that they offered $3 billion, yes billion, for the company, which Skype promptly turned down.  But why would Fox want Skype?  Well many are speculating that News Corp. wants to target the MTV generation, who don’t use traditional services, such as broadcast TV, wired telephones and so on.  Through Skype, News Corp would hope to capture some of the “X” generation.

In other news, it appears that the chinese market is all the rage now a days.  It was just last week that Chinese search engine Baidu had it’s IPO and raised untold millions.  More news today that Yahoo! wants to move into the Chinese market and is in talks to buy a stake in China’s largest home grown E-commerce company for almost $1 billion.

In other Yahoo! news, the company announced that they will create a new way to help track ad spending, by ensuring ad counting is more accurate.  The new system will count ads only if they are rendered on a browser, as opposed to the more traditional measurement of being served.  In other words, it was possible, before the system, to have inflated impression counts merely by counting how many times the ad was served regardless of if they were fully loaded on a web page.  If a user navigated away too quickly from a page, they wouldn’t see the ad, however it would have still been counted as an impression.

This all seems to be convenient timing, as Google is again under fire for it’s advertising program.  This time, however, the cause has a name and his name is Howard Stern.  That’s right, the famous shock jock has apparently filed suit against Google AdWords over fraudulent clicks.

On the wireless front, AOL has announced plans to accelerate its move into the wireless web with the acquistion of Wildseed.  This purchase will allow AOL to give its users more control over their wireless AOL experience by allowing for phone personalization.

Finally today, there is speculation that Amazon will be getting into digital music before the fall.  while the company has been in licensing talks with many music industry execs, they have largely gone nowhere.  the talks did resume recently, however, leading many in the industry to speculate that the new service could be available soon.

As I said last week, not much news as it’s only day 1 of SES San Jose, but expect more later in the week.
