Making money on AdSense, Baidu and more.. Daily Round up Aug 5, 2005

There was lots of talk of money today.  Some because of yet another tech IPO that went huge and more discussion of just how much money some AdSense sites are making.

I saw this coming yet again I didn’t get into it.  I knew Google would take off, but when they opened at $85 per share I thought it was too much (doh!).  Baidu, the Chinese search engine into which Google has invested millions, had their IPO today.  The shares opened at $27 each but quickly rose. By the end of trading today, the shares were valued at over $122 each.  Gee I wonder how much money Google made today off this IPO?

Speaking of making money and Google, there was an interesting interview with Jason Calacanis of Weblogs Inc. in which he openly discusses how much money he intends to make on Google AdSense this year.  I remember hearing about this a few weeks ago and I thought this guy was reaching a bit but it turns out he might hit his goal after all.  So what is his goal?  how does a 1 with six 0’s after it sound?  That’s right – he expects to make over $1 million on AdSense.  Of course as he’s quick to mention, that’s not all profit.  After all he has dozens of paid staff including writers helping to contribute to the growth of content that keeps his network current.

In other Google news, it appears that Google may be blacklisting CNET reporters and not answering their questions.  This after some personal details about Google’s own Eric Schmidt surfaced in a CNET article.

OK enough Google for today, let’s talk about something else, shall we?

MSN has launched a new service called MSN Filter.  According to the website, MSN Filter is your one-stop shop for the inside scoop on what’s happening across the Web, according to the people who know the most … YOU! It is basically links to various blogs and MSN Spaces.  It should be interesting to see how this one evolves however as MSN is quite into offering custom content to their users when they want it.  This could be yet another foray into that market.

According to popular tech site Boingboing, the IMDB is blocking access to those users who are running ad blocking software, or trying to access the site via an anonymous proxy. While it couldn’t be immediately confirmed, a well known contributor of the site say she was blocked.

Yet more hacker news, and if you stay in hotels frequently, you may be interested in this:  Wired is reporting that it’s quite easy to hack into a hotel’s TV system allowing access to guest information such as billing even emails sent via the system.  Apparently there is a vulnerability in the IR (InfraRed) system used by most hotels which could allow access to the hotels systems.

And finally, to start your weekend, I found something that I thought that was cool and has nothing to do with search or hacking:

Whoever said that fire and water don’t mix have obviously never heard of the Aqueon Fireplace.  This cool device turns water into fire.  It’s true – using a process called electrolysis, the device separates the hydrogen from the oxygen in water and ignites the hydrogen.  It then uses some of the oxygen to add color and brightness to the flame, and releases the rest of the oxygen into the atmosphere. Since it’s oxygen that is released instead of the more traditional carbon dioxide that other fireplaces release, its totally safe for indoor use and good for you to boot!

Well, that’s about it, now you can go out and enjoy the weekend!
