Google on a TV near you... Daily Round up Aug 2, 2005

There’s some significant news to report of in today’s roundup but before we do let’s briefly summarize what Google’s been up to including seeing some of their data used on a new TV program, yet another Google patent and more

Current.TV is the brainchild of former US vice-president Al Gore.  The network features segments on fashion, dating, travel, entertainment and news, and is utilizing Google’s Zeitgeist to update viewers every ½ hour on “what’s hot” on Google.

In a Searchenginewatch thread started by yours truly I showcased some new results I found on Google.  Today, I noticed very similar results.  It appears that Google is indeed showing off some new features, highlighting other areas of a website within that site, under the main listing.  If you don’t see it soon, I’m sure you will later.

Yet another Google patent has been discovered.  This one showing Google’s attempt to patent “invisible tabs.” These tabs are much like the visible tabs you do see on Google, however the results only appear when a search matching the tabs is launched.  For example, if you search for “digital camera” you may see not only regular search results, but you could also see Froogle (Google’s shopping engine) results, as well as News and even local results.

A Barcelona based adult entertainment company has announced plans to offer mobile entertainment.  Don’t be too surprised if the guy next to you happens to be watching “Debbie Does Dallas” although I’m sure there will be laws passed (if there isn’t already) limiting or prohibiting access to these services in public places.  It was only a matter of time, after all porn seems to be a hot online topic.  Therefore it makes sense in some way that people would want to make money on it via a portable device.

The blogosphere grew again.  For those who don’t know – the “blogosphere” refers to blogs in general.  According to a recent study the blogosphere has doubled in size in the past 5 months.  That means that there are twice as many blogs now as there were 5 months ago.  As of the end of July 2005, Technorati was tracking over 14.2 Million weblogs, while in March 2005 they were tracking 7.8 million blogs.

The meta search engine Dogpile has released a new tool in conjunction with a recent study that says search engine results are further apart than they’ve ever been.  In fact almost 85% of unique results weren’t shared across the 4 main engines.  Only just over 1% were shared.  So, you are probably wondering how unique are the results on each engine?  Well, 73.9% of Ask Jeeves first page results were unique to Ask Jeeves, while 71.2% of Yahoo first page results were unique to Yahoo.  70.8% of MSN search first page results were unique to MSN search and 66.4% of Google first page results were unique to Google.

I saved the best for last today.

In what could be a major shake up for our industry, it was announced that Jupiter Media has sold the ClickZ network, including Search Engine Watch and Search Engine Strategies.  London-based trade publisher Incisive Media plc, has made the purchase and promises to increase the occurrences of the popular Search Engine Strategies trade shows, which would be a good thing for me, as I speak at the occasional show.

That’s it for today – be sure to check back tomorrow.
