It was a quite day today on the search engine front.  While there was some expected news (from Ask Jeeves) there was also some unexpected (but not surprising) and some interesting.  Yahoo! Google, MSN And Ask Jeeves all make the news today.

As you may already be aware, I wrote an article today about how Yahoo! may be the next media empire.  Turns out, I wasn’t too far from the truth.

Starting in September, Yahoo! will be offering feeds from CNN and ABC News.  While this may be nothing new, what’s interesting is that these appear to be video news feeds and not your typical print feeds.  In other words, you can get video news online whenever their feeds are updated.  Is this the next step in the evolution of the Yahoo! media empire?

In other Yahoo! news, Flickr (owned by Yahoo!) is offering search results clustering.  While all search engines have been experimenting with search clustering (that is when the search engine offers results similar to what you search for.  So if you searched for “search engine” you could also be presented with results for “search engine marketing,” “metasearch,” “search engine optimization,” “google” and more) this is one of the first non-search engines to utilize this relatively new technology.  So if you were perform a cluster search for dogs, you could also see results for “puppy,” ‘labrador,” “nose,” “paws” and more.

Ask Jeeves has moved one step closer to its own sponsored program.  By going to their sponsored listings page you will soon be able to place Ask Jeeves sponsored ads ahead of Google Adwords.  No more details yet on pricing or availability.

In Google news, the company is again looking for more office space.  In a report by the San Jose Business Journal Google “is probing development of a million-square-foot headquarters-type campus.”

In other Google news, you can now find an improved and expanded help section.  This is great, especially if you are new to Google and how to get your site listed on the popular engine.

On the “Google Hacks” front, a somewhat disturbing new Google Map hack that overlays the effects of a high yield nuclear detonation over the popular map service.  It shows that a 100 KT detonation over the southern part of Manhattan would take out ˝ the island.

Finally today, MSN Shopping has finally launched as a non-beta version.  In other words, the “real” version of MSN Shopping is now live.  The service boasts an increase selection, spelling correction on your searches, product comparisons, product reviews and RSS feeds to name just a few of the options.  And if you run Linux and Mozilla the site still works!  :)

That’s all today, be sure to check back tomorrow for even more news.
