Email This ArticleAs I was reading through the news today I was thinking about how fast things are going these days. Everyone is into tagging, feeds, photo uploads and more. So of course I thought of the line from the Wizard of Oz - ‘Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My.’ Only this time its ‘Tagging and Uploading and Feeds, Oh My’ because that seems to be the topic of choice among the new products search engines are releasing these days.
It started when Google bought Blogger quite some time ago. They then purchased Picasa, a photo tool, and then tied them together so that you could upload to your Blogger blog via Picasa.
Then, as we reported a few days ago, Yahoo added the ability to link your Flickr account to their social networking package – 360, as well as the ability to add and share feeds. And of course, you can now tag your Mysearch saved pages too.
Now Ask Jeeves is previewing a new product with the same features as part of their “MyJeeves” service. So, what’s new? Well, Ask now supports Technorati type tagging (just like Yahoo!s My Search) and the ability to upload photos from your computer or mobile device, again like Yahoo!s My Search and 360. You can find out more at Ask Jeeves Search Blog
Yahoo! has decided to get into the search game (again) by hiring some former IBM search researchers. This could bode well for Yahoo! because the researchers at IBM were working on some pretty advanced (and impressive) search technology, but IBM abandoned the project. This could be good news for Yahoo! because up until now the search powered by Yahoo! has been lackluster at best. Updates are infrequent and I find the results aren’t as relevant as they should be. Hopefully some of the IBM research will find its way into Yahoo!
A couple of Google tidbits for you from Searchenginewatch.com: Google has recently registered some new domains. Googleanalytic.com (and other domains) and Google-analytic.com (and other domains) were registered in the past week. Could this mean that Urchin will be re-released? And if so, will Google do what its traditionally done and release it for free? One can only hope. Also, yet another Google patent was found indicating that Google has already tried to patent RSS ads. That is, they wanted to be the patent owner of the ability to serve ads within RSS (blog and other news) feeds.
Also, on the RSS front, Microsoft is busy discussing it’s web future. MSN will be releasing new search, social-networking, Web e-mail and advertising (read PPC) products in the coming months, as well as a new RSS search platform. They are also busily improving their custom homepage, start.com, and adding new features such as the ability to add feeds (see a theme here?). You can find our more about Microsoft’s plans via this Powerpoint.
Oh yeah, did I mention that Microsoft has been trying to combat piracy by forcing Windows XP users to verify their version of the popular operating system is legal? That new security program was cracked in 24 hours. Boingboing.com has more details.
Finally today, another service has launched a mobile system. Technorati, the popular blog search, now has a mobile front page. So if you just can’t wait to get home to search your favorite blogs online, do it with your mobile phone.
Well that’s all for this week – if you live in Canada, have a great long weekend, and if not, don’t you wish you did?
