GoogleGuy an engineer at Google shows over at Search Engine Watch what can happen when you link to sites that are considered “bad neighborhoods.”
Blair the ower of www.quitsmokingsupport.com gave some links to a couple of spammy sites.  He woke up one morning with a penalty on his site, his PR dropped from PR6 to a PR4 and his cherished first page Rankings on Google all gone.  It cost him 30% of his traffic.

Blair does his site on a not-for-profit bases and as a ex-smoker he receives strength to stay quit by helping others.  On his request I took a quite look at his site for him, checked out his code for anything spammy, confirm he was under a penalty and then posted, on his request, to SEW a request for help.  I invokes GoogleGuys name in the first post and in less that 2 days he was there and spelled it out very clearly what the problem was.  (Ya I know I should have spotted it.  Didn’t take the time to look that far.  And the funny think is that none of the other SEO types that pitched in found it either.)

Well all the spammy links are gone, Blair gone his PR back, but he is going to be waiting quite a while to get his Rankings back.  I am guessing anywhere from 1 to 3 months.

This is a good lesson for those that don’t have an eye for detecting spammy sites.  And even could be a good reason to purchase links instead of risking making a mistaken and linking to a spammy site via a reciprocal link.
