"Phoenix” over at Seroundtable.com writes a good little summary about how to handle copyright infringement.  At a time when copyright theft is at an alltime high .…

its important to know what your rights are and the best way to handle it.

We personally have delt with copyright theft on many of our sites.  The question you have to ask yourself is whether it is worth the time to persue or not.  Sometimes the theives are nice enough to put a link back to our site, in that case we will often let it fly.  If they steal it straight out with out any link back or recognition then we may go as far as to even have our lawyers send them a nice cease and desist letter.  You will find that in most cases that will be enough to get them to stop.  If you would like to persue the case even farther you have the right to complain directly to the search engines and to the ISP where they are hosting their site.  Visit the Seroundtable.com article for more details about how to do that.

In their article on seroundtable they also mention a new program out called Article Guard which will automatically search the web to find copied content.  We also suggest using www.copyscape.com which is a free service and fairly capable.  They promote a service on that site called Google Alert, we have not used the service but it seems to be similar to Article Guard.
