Email This ArticleThe Chinese engine in which Google has invested has been sued, tons of Google news including speculation, jokes and ‘failures’ MSN releases more developer tools and a countrys ISPs have agreed to work together to collaborate on wi-fi.
When I first started checking the news this morning I was shocked to find there was not much worthwhile reporting on. Sure I could have told you about the new Nintendo wireless controller, or how to create a cluster of computers out of old Macs but those aren’t really search related.
However when I checked later on I was again surprised to see tons of news.
First, to the legal stuff. Baidu is being sued by the largest record companies for copyright infringement. They claim the engine has been providing links to users to then download music illegally.
According to a report in the New York Times and quoted in this article Google may indeed be developing an alternative to Paypal. While Google denies the rumor, one could assume they are doing something bank-wise. We know they are looking for banking-type employees and have recently registered many domains which indicate such a service. Guess time will tell.
Webmasterworld was trying to be funny, and released a press release indicating that Google was getting into porn. Of course, the domain indicated is registered by Webmasterworld and not Google so one would have to assume that this is a joke.
Marissa Meyer has posted on the Google blog explaining how Googlebombing works. Apparently some people have been questioning why George Bush’s personal bio on the Whitehouse website is appearing #1 for “miserable failure” AND “failure.” She felt the need to let people know that this wasn’t Google’s opinion but was in fact a result of heavily linking.
MSN is releasing developer tools for Virtual Earth.
Apparently TV networks are getting into blogging. Kinda. They are using entertainment related blogs to promote TV shows. This will probably turn around and bite them in the behind. This is because bloggers are very territorial and don’t like obvious promotion in blogs. It will be interesting to hear what the fallout will be.
Finally today, if you live in Canada you will want to read this: Bell and Rogers, two of the larger ISPs in Canada are going to cooperate to develop the largest wi-fi network in Canada. Their plans will take some time but in the end they expect to allow as much as 2/3 of the country to have wi-fi access.
So, now you know what I know :) Have a great weekend!
