Email This ArticleWow. My inbox was almost overflowing with all the news of the day. From an impressive hire by Google, to some new (if late) features from MSN, to a legal settlement which could pave the way to changes on the web. Ebay may be getting into the VOIP game, how a spider ‘sees’ your site, why you shouldn’t dig holes, and how to install Mac OS on your PC.
First, the Google news (what a surprise). Google has done something incredible by hiring an internet Pioneer. This guy has been in it from the beginning even helping co-create the protocol that drives the internet: TCP/IP. On the heels of this, the Washington Post has a great summary of other notable Google hires.
In the last bit of Google news, engineer Matt Cutts discusses what is considered an update by Google. Apparently we aren’t experiencing an update now, despite the fact that the index seems to be doubling in size. No, what we are seeing now is a “tweaking” of the results by applying previously crawled links and applying new PageRank values.
There are 2 new MSN toolbar plugins. One could be quite useful (an anti-phishing plugin) while the other is purely entertainment (a games plugin).
In other MSN news, the company is finally releasing some developer tools aimed at aiding web developers in building web apps linked to MSN. Google and Yahoo! have had such tools for some time now, so this is only a matter of MSN playing catchup.
In what is sure to cause ripples throughout the web, and may affect the way some SEM’s do their business, Geico and Google have settled their trademark dispute. While no terms were disclosed, one would assume that Google paid some money to Geico.
In the “could it be so?” file we add this bit of news: Ebay is apparently in talks to buy Skype the VOIP company which allows free PC to PC calls and inexpensive PC to phone calls. I’m not really sure why Ebay would be interested in Skype, other than perhaps offering Pay Per Call services, or other similar services. Considering the deal is rumored to be in the billions, Ebay will be anxious to monetize the service as soon as possible, should the deal go through.
One of my favorite sites – SEO Blackhat – has a great article on how a crawler sees your site. The thing I like about this site is that they are pretty open about some of the tactics available to black hatters. Then what one can do is devise strategies to either combat them (if you are competing) or modify them so they are less black and more grey.
Ok a couple fun things for you:
I came across a site today which provides detailed instructions on installing the Mac OS on your PC. We already know that Mac is moving from the PowerPC architecture to the x86 PC platform but the OS wasn’t supposed to be available for some time. But like anything hot, it got leaked. The site even gives instructions on how to “find” the OS.
When I was a kid I often wondered what would happen if I started digging a hole in my backyard and dug all the way through the Earth. Where would I end up? Well according to this site, I’d probably end up in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Whew! Good thing I didn’t try that!
Well that’s about it for today. Be sure to come back tomorrow for more! And don’t forget to check out my article tomorrow. In it I speculate on what Google wants to do with the new cash it’s going to get from the upcoming share sale. You might be interested to know what ideas I have.
