Lots of Google News via Google blogs and more....Daily Round up August 17, 2005

Well, I called it without even knowing it.  I wondered how President Bush can get his way, but he did.  Plus I found lots of Google news on Google blogs. In particular a new Google blog, plus information about new Google services and more.

It was just yesterday that I was wondering how President Bush could have so much pull, yet now it appears he will be getting his way.  ICANN has decided to will delay a decision on the .XXX domain based on the results of 6,000 letters and email sent to the Commerce Department.  Who would have thought that a mere 6,000 people out of the entire American population could have such an impact on global events.

On to Google news – Google’s own blog is reporting that they have new mobile features specific to Froogle. They indicate that you can do real time price comparisons using the new Froogle Mobile service.  So if you are in the store shopping and want to compare prices you will be able to.

Another Google Blog, this one about Google AdWords explains about the new, more simplified reports. There is some good debate ongoing now about how much advertisers are spending and so on. Now Google has introduced new guidelines involving ad quality which can be impacted not only by your own ad, but those of other advertisers bidding on the same keyword.  In other words, your ad could effectively be getting penalized by others bidding on the same phrase as you if their ads are of inferior quality.  Expect to hear more about this in the coming days.

In constrast to Google AdWords, Google has launched a new blog - this one aimed at Google AdSense customers. I am particularly interested in this one as I am one of those AdSense customers.  I don’t make a lot of money a month, but anything I can do to improve my payments will be considered.

In my last bit of Google news today, Search Engine Watch is reporting that Google has registered some new domains.  They include Googlemoviereviews.com and Googleshowtime.com.  Could these new domains be tied to new services?  Only time will tell.  On a related note, I came across a Google domain that was registered that I haven’t heard much of.  Google-bank.com has been registered by Google but isn’t active yet.  Is this domain proof of a pay-pal competitor that Google is developing?

OK enough about Google.  Let’s talk about Yahoo!

A report from Internet News says that Yahoo! has denied rumors about moving into VOIP.  While an analyst at Piper Jaffray said that it was likely that Yahoo! would move in such a direction Yahoo! denies the rumor.  Considering that Yahoo! recently released a new IM client with voice capabilities, I can see that they either are telling the truth, and not getting into VOIP, or they already have and the new IM is their first steps in that direction.

More blog news – this time from the Yahoo Search Blog.  The company has released a new and improved local search.  I must say I’m pretty impressed with this.  It’s much more accurate than previously.  And the zooming map on the left side is cool!  So if you are looking for a restaurant tonight why not try out Yahoo! Local and see what you think.

Finally some kinda funny news.

Did you ever wonder where a search engine gets their results?  Well in the case of MSN, it appears that they get some of them from Ask Jeeves.  A post over a the Search Engine Watch forums shows that MSN is indexing Ask Jeeves and appears to give them favor.  In fact if you perform the search for Big Blue Pineapple Chair you will see that Ask is #3.  But you wanna see something really funny?  Check out the #4 result.

I guess MSN thinks that Ask Jeeves results are more relevant than their own.  Well, geez, I coulda told you that :)
